Equirab Ingredients and Usage

The active ingredient is Human Rabies Immunoglobulin (HRIG), derived from human plasma containing high levels of anti-rabies antibodies. The entire dose is administered intramuscularly around the wound site as soon as possible after exposure.

Equirab is clinically indicated for:

• Post-exposure prophylaxis of rabies infection
• Immediate passive immunization after category III animal bites
• Protection during the initial period before vaccine-induced immunity develops
• Treatment of severe exposure to rabid or suspected rabid animals

How Does Equirab Work?

Equirab provides immediate passive immunity through antibody transfer:

1. Virus Neutralization: Provides ready-made antibodies that neutralize rabies virus at the wound site
2. Immediate Protection: Offers instant immunity while rabies vaccine takes time to produce active immunity
3. Wound Infiltration: When possible, infiltrated around the bite wound to block viral entry
4. Bridge Protection: Protects during the critical 7-10 days until vaccine-induced immunity develops

Equirab Side Effects and Warnings

Common side effects include pain and tenderness at injection site, mild fever, headache, and muscle stiffness. Most reactions are mild and transient.

Serious Considerations

1. Anaphylaxis Risk: May cause severe allergic reactions in sensitive individuals
2. Proper Administration: Must be given at a different site from the rabies vaccine
3. Timing Critical: Most effective when administered within 24 hours of exposure
4. Wound Infiltration: As much as possible should be infiltrated around the wound site
5. Vaccine Interference: Does not interfere with active immunization by rabies vaccine

Equirab Injection requires strict storage conditions:

• Store at 2°C to 8°C in refrigerator
• Do not freeze - protect from light
• Keep in original carton until use
• Do not use if cloudy or contains particles
• Use immediately after opening
