Exef Ingredients and Usage

The active ingredient is Cefuroxime Axetil, a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to active cefuroxime after absorption. The 250mg tablet is usually taken twice daily after food to enhance absorption.

Exef is clinically indicated for:

• Upper and lower respiratory tract infections
• Urinary tract infections including cystitis and pyelonephritis
• Skin and soft tissue infections
• Uncomplicated gonorrhea
• Early Lyme disease

How Does Exef Work?

Exef provides bactericidal action through bacterial cell wall disruption:

1. Cell Wall Synthesis Inhibition: Binds to penicillin-binding proteins in bacterial cell walls
2. Bactericidal Activity: Causes bacterial cell death by disrupting cell wall integrity

Exef Side Effects and Warnings

Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and headache. Most adverse effects are mild and self-limiting.

1. Hypersensitivity Reactions: Cross-reactivity possible in penicillin-allergic patients
2. C.difficile Diarrhea: May cause antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis
